How Watching Movies and TV Shows Helps Create Balance in Life
In today’s world, so much is required of us and we hardly have time for TV or movies. There’s a common belief that television is a distraction or a waste of time. But the truth is, sometimes we need movies and TV shows to escape reality, to unwind, and to bring a sense of balance into our lives.
For me, watching films isn’t just about passing time—it’s a ritual that helps me recharge, much like listening to music from different years of my life. See the blog post here.
In fact, I take a similar approach to movies and TV shows, selecting films from different periods of my past to relive nostalgic moments, spark creativity, and find peace.
The Role of Movies & TV in Restoring Balance
Balance isn’t just about work and productivity; it’s also about knowing when to pause and let yourself be immersed in something that brings you joy. Surround your ears with Dolby Atmos and surrender to the moment.
Movies and TV shows provide that balance by offering:
• A mental escape: They transport you to fictional worlds where you can forget real-life stress for a while.
• A way to experience nostalgia: Watching movies from different stages of life brings back memories and emotions from those times.
• A creative spark: Just like music, films and TV shows inspire ideas fueling creativity.
Choosing Movies & TV Shows by Year: A Nostalgic Escape
Just as I listen to music from each year of my life, I also select movies and TV shows from different time periods. This practice isn’t just about rewatching old favorites; it’s about revisiting who I was during those times and experiencing the emotions tied to them.
Here’s how you can create your own “Nostalgic Watchlist”:
1. Make a List of Years That Shaped You
○ Think about the years that hold special memories—your childhood, teenage years, early adulthood.
○ Consider what movies or TV shows you loved during those times.
2. Find Movies & Shows from Each Period
○ Search for “Top Movies of [Year]” or “Most Popular TV Shows of [Year]” on Google.
○ Check old DVDs, streaming platforms, or recommendations from friends. I don’t know about you, but the period of DVDs were the best years of my life. That feeling when your sibling or parent brought home something new to watch for a Sunday evening. To this day our family’s collection is in the very same spot, with the old DVD player nested on our brown entertainment center.
3. Dedicate Time to Watching Each Era
○ You can dedicate a weekend, a day, or even a month to a specific year.
○ Pair your movie night with activities that make it feel more immersive, like eating snacks, treats, and candies from that era, or listening to music from that time.
4. Reflect on the Experience
○ How did the movie make you feel?
○ Did it remind you of a certain stage in life?
○ What emotions came up while watching?
A Journey Through Time
Just like music, movies evoke emotions and transport us back to different versions of ourselves. If you’ve already started creating a year-by-year music playlist (as I discussed in How Music Inspires Creativity), you can pair your movie selections with the music of that era for an even deeper nostalgic experience. Trust me, it brings those chills, goosebumps, and a feeling that everything will be okay in this chaotic world. Create your bubble and your portal to that transformative experience. Recreate, reimagine, redesign and redefine what it means to time-travel. Transcend time through watching movies and give in to those emotions.
Why It’s Okay to “Lose Time” in a Movie
Sometimes, we feel guilty about taking a break to watch TV or movies. But balance in life means knowing when to work and when to unwind. Watching something you truly enjoy isn’t time wasted—it’s an investment in your well-being.
Looking Ahead: Future Recommendations & Projector Setup
Since I own a projector, watching movies has become an even more immersive experience. In the future, I plan to write a detailed post about the Top 5 Projectors for an At-Home Cinema Experience, so stay tuned for that!
I also can’t wait to try out movie nights in my new space. I’m excited to see how my setup turns out and what kind of cozy vibe I can create.
For now, if you’ve been neglecting your favorite movies and shows because you feel too busy, give yourself permission to slow down, hit play, and let yourself be transported into another dimension.
